My card was declined while I was buying nappies for my baby. My husband told me to figure it out myself. His mother called me a useless leech. So I rang my late father's banker and said one sentence.

Six years. About four hundred conversations about money. And in every one of them I was the only person in the room who knew the floor was mine.

He has been unbearable about money since the summer.

Controlling. Pompous. Cold in about four specific ways I could list. And finally cruel, down a telephone, to a woman at a till with a baby on her hip.

Every bit of that is on the record and visible and about twenty people watched the end of it.

And I have been something I do not have a word for yet.

Since 2019. Pleasantly. At a kitchen table, four nights a week, for six years, with a smile on.

Nobody will ever put what I did in a video. There is no footage of a woman not saying a sentence.

It has been eleven weeks.

I did not accelerate the debt.

The option sat live for ninety-six hours and then expired on its own, and I did not renew it, and Teague did not ask me whether I wanted to.

He had worked out by then what I was going to do, about four days before I had.

What I did instead, on the second day, through Teague, was clear four months of payroll arrears and the two worst supplier accounts.

It took about forty minutes on the telephone. It is the largest thing I have ever done with money and it was done in a kitchen in a dressing gown while a baby slept upstairs.

It was done through the bank, as a facility adjustment on the credit line.

My name is nowhere on it. Teague constructed it that way because I asked him to and because he is extremely good at his job.

For nine days Garrick believed the bank had restructured him out of nowhere. He rang me from the office on the second day, at about four in the afternoon, and he was so relieved that he could not finish a sentence.

I listened to that man cry down a telephone about something I had done, and I said: that's wonderful.

And that is the thing I have had to look at.

Because that is precisely what my father did.

He had the power and he had the information and he used it silently, from behind a wall, rather than say a sentence out loud to somebody he loved — and I watched the whole shape of it arrive in my own life and then did the identical thing inside forty-eight hours.
