The Secret Beneath My Husband’s Cast — Part Two

The Secret Beneath My Husband’s Cast — Part Two

For a moment, Conor looked as though he might faint.

His fingers tightened around the towel, and his eyes darted toward the bathroom door as if he were searching for a way to escape the conversation.

“Cynthia, I can explain,” he finally whispered.

I had heard those words countless times in television dramas, usually from someone who had done something terrible.

I never imagined I would hear them from my own husband.

“Then explain,” I replied. “Because I have spent thirty-two years believing I knew you better than anyone else in this world. And for the past two weeks, you’ve been treating me like a stranger.”

He lowered his head.

I could see that he was struggling to find the right words, but I had reached the end of my patience.

“Is that scar from a surgery?” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Conor, look at me.”

Slowly, he raised his eyes.

“Yes.”

The single word struck me harder than I expected.

“What kind of surgery?”

He swallowed.

“It’s complicated.”

I let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

“Complicated? You have a scar on your leg that I’ve never seen before, you’ve been locking the bathroom door, and you’ve spent two weeks preventing your wife from touching your cast. What part of that am I supposed to find uncomplicated?”

“Please don’t shout.”

“I’m not shouting!”

My voice echoed through the bathroom.

Then I stopped.

I was frightened by how quickly my anger had taken control of me. I had come upstairs because my husband had fallen. He was sitting on the cold tiles, injured and pale, and I was interrogating him as though he were a criminal.

I took a breath.

“First, we need to get you checked. Your cast is damaged, and you

could have hurt yourself when you fell. We can discuss everything else afterward.”

For the first time that evening, Conor seemed relieved.

He nodded.

I helped him sit comfortably while I called the urgent medical service for advice. They told us not to attempt to repair the cast ourselves and arranged for him to be assessed.

Throughout the process, Conor barely spoke.

And I couldn’t stop thinking about that scar.

It wasn’t just its location that disturbed me. It was the fact that my husband had undergone a medical procedure without telling me.
