The Secret Beneath My Husband’s Cast — Part Two

“I am angry. I’m hurt. And I don’t know how long it will take before I stop wondering what else you might

be keeping from me.”

He lowered his eyes.

“But I’m not going anywhere because you’re frightened.”

His eyes filled again.

“I don’t deserve you.”

I shook my head.

“That’s not the point. Marriage isn’t a reward you receive for being brave or strong. It’s a promise that we’re supposed to keep, especially when life becomes frightening.”

He reached for my hand.

This time, I let him hold it.

Then I added, “But if you ever hide something this important from me again, we will have a very different conversation.”

A faint, sorrowful smile appeared on his face.

“Understood.”

I rested my head against his shoulder, careful not to disturb his injured leg.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

I thought about the thirty-two years behind us, the arguments we had survived, the children we had raised, and the ordinary mornings I had once assumed would continue forever.

I also

thought about how easily fear could turn love into silence.

Conor had believed he was protecting me.

Instead, he had left me alone with my imagination, forcing me to invent explanations far more frightening than the truth he had been too afraid to share.

And I realized that the hardest part of what lay ahead might not be the medical appointments or the uncertainty surrounding his diagnosis.

It might be learning how to trust each other again.

The following morning, I woke before sunrise.

Conor was still asleep, his face turned toward my side of the bed. For the first time in weeks, his injured leg rested where it naturally fell instead of being carefully hidden on the far side of the mattress.

I watched him for a moment.

Then I got out of bed, collected the medical documents from the kitchen table, and placed them in a folder.

Our

specialist appointment was scheduled for the following afternoon.

I intended to be there for every question, every explanation, and every difficult answer.

But as I was putting the papers away, I noticed another document tucked inside the envelope.

It was a receipt from the private clinic where Conor had undergone surgery.

I glanced at the date.

Then I looked again.

The operation had taken place almost two months earlier than he had told me.
