The Letter We Never Wanted You to Read

One Last Surprise

Elise took the microphone.

“We’re not finished.”

The lights dimmed.

A video appeared on the giant screen.

Neighbors.

Teachers.

The crossing guard.

The librarian.

Even the woman who worked at the grocery store.

One after another, they shared memories.

“He always worked overtime so the girls could join every school trip.”

“He never bought himself a new truck.”

“He learned to braid hair by watching YouTube at two in the morning.”

“He never missed a parent-teacher conference.”

Then my elderly neighbor appeared.

The same woman who had once told me I couldn’t raise three babies alone.

She smiled.

“I’ve never been happier to be wrong.”

The audience laughed through tears.

The Gift

Nora spoke again.

“For years, people asked us what we wanted after graduation.”

“We all gave the same answer.”

“We wanted to give our dad a future.”

Behind me, curtains opened.

Parked inside the auditorium was a brand-new pickup truck.

Not fancy.

Not expensive.

Exactly the model I’d admired for years but could never afford.

The license plate read:

DAD 3X

The crowd erupted in applause.
