The Letter We Never Wanted You to Read

The auditorium became so quiet that I could hear my own heartbeat.

Nora unfolded the yellowed piece of paper with trembling hands.

“We found this hidden inside an old toolbox while cleaning the attic before graduation,” she said.

“We almost didn’t read it.”

She looked directly at me.

“But after we did… we understood everything.”

Then she began.

To my daughters,

If this letter ever reaches you, it means you’ve grown into the women I never had the courage to raise.

Before you judge me…

Please know this.

The man you call Uncle Elias is the greatest father you’ll ever know.

I abandoned you.

He never did.

Every birthday candle you blew out…

Every nightmare you woke from…

Every graduation.

Every scraped knee.

Every Christmas morning.

He was there.

I wasn’t.

If you remember only one thing about me…

Remember this:

Your real father is not the man who gave you life.

It’s the man who gave up his life so you could have one.

By the time Nora finished reading, tears were running down faces all across the auditorium.

I couldn’t lift my head.

The Second Envelope

Maya stepped forward.

“We thought that was all.”

She held up another envelope.

“But there was one more.”

“It was addressed…”

She paused.

“…to Uncle Elias.”

My hands began to shake.

“I’ve never seen that before.”

Nora smiled through tears.

“He wanted us to decide when you were ready.”

She walked off the stage and placed it in my hands.

I slowly opened it.
