On Our Wedding Night, My Husband Chose His First Love, So I Disappeared Before Dawn and Let Him Discover What He Had Really Lost

I did not contact him and he did not contact me. That is not a figure of speech. Four days, no calls, nothing.

I told my mother on the Sunday morning and she rang two of her sisters, and by the Monday there was a version of it in Sablefort that had him in a hotel with his ex and me sedated, and I did not correct one word of it, because at that point I believed most of it myself.

I cancelled the honeymoon on the Monday. I rang the airline and said the word bereavement because it was the only word that made them waive the fee, and I remember thinking at the time that it was a strange lie to reach for.

On the Tuesday I rang our solicitor. On the Wednesday I got the auditors to pull everything on Cobb Consulting going back to 2019.

And on the Wednesday evening, at about nine, a number I did not know rang me, and a woman said: "Mrs Foyle? It's Verity Cobb. Please don't hang up. I'm going to talk for about ninety seconds and then you can."
