On Our Wedding Night, My Husband Chose His First Love, So I Disappeared Before Dawn and Let Him Discover What He Had Really Lost

At thirteen minutes past two in the morning on my wedding night, I watched my husband walk down our drive with an overnight bag while another woman waited for him in a black SUV.

He stopped once.

Not to look back at the house. Not to think again about anything he had said twelve hours earlier. Not even to take the ring off, which he did later, on the kitchen counter, where I found it.

He stopped under the porch light to answer his phone.

And then he smiled.

I knew that smile. For four years I had believed it belonged to me.

By sunrise I was gone.

And the only thing I left on that counter was my own ring, sitting on top of a printed bank statement.
