Inside were copies of two documents.
The first was a letter from my attorney.
The second was the deed to our house.
Mark stared at it.
Then he looked up.
“Why is your name the only one on this?”
I took a breath.
“Because my father gave me this house before we married. You knew that.”
“But I paid for renovations!”
“And any legitimate financial claims can be addressed through our lawyers.”
His face changed.
“Are you telling me to leave?”
“I’m asking you to stay somewhere else while we decide what happens next.”
He looked at his mother.
“Mom, say something!”
Elaine slowly stood.
Then she spoke words I will never forget.
“I spent years wondering why Claire left you. Tonight, I finally understand.”
Mark went silent.
Claire picked up her purse.
But before leaving, she turned toward me.
“There’s something you need to know.”
Mark immediately stepped forward.
