It showed Mark and Claire kissing outside the hotel.
“Mark,” she whispered, “please tell me this isn’t true.”
He pointed at me.
“She invaded my privacy!”
His mother looked disgusted.
“That’s your explanation?”
Claire suddenly stood.
“You don’t understand! Mark told me their marriage was already over!” looked at her.
“He told you that?”
She nodded.
“He said you were only living together because of the pregnancy.”
Mark shouted, “CLAIRE, STOP TALKING!”
But she wasn’t finished.
“He said you knew he wanted to leave!”
I almost laughed.
For months, he’d convinced me that I was jealous and insecure.
Now he was trying to convince everyone that I was unreasonable for discovering his lies.
But the most important surprise was still inside my handbag.
“Mark,” I said, “there’s something else.”
He looked furious.
“What else could you possibly want?”
I removed another envelope.
“This one is just for you.”
