The fatal dinner

Lucy overheard snippets of the conversation and understood enough to feel a chill run down her spine. Steven was convinced everything was going according to plan. He didn't just want to get rid of her; he'd included Tommy in his scheme too. The betrayal was complete.

As he spoke, Lucy picked up another voice on the other end of the line: a woman's, an accomplice, or perhaps something more. The conversation was brief, but revealing. There was a prior agreement, a shared intention, and a coldness impossible to justify. Steven spoke of "freedom" with an indifference that left her breathless.

They had staged the scene to look like a tragedy.
Steven planned to return later and feign surprise.
Tommy was also in danger.
When Steven walked out the door, Lucy waited a few seconds before moving. Her fingers found Tommy's. He was still awake. That small detail gave her back a strength she didn't know she still possessed.
The Escape and the Unexpected Signal
With enormous effort, Lucy managed to pull out her phone and crawl into the hallway, where a bar of signal finally appeared. She called emergency services once, twice, until the connection was established. She spoke in a trembling voice, explaining that her husband had poisoned them and that her son was still alive. The operator reacted immediately and told her to lock herself in a safe place.

Lucy took Tommy to the bathroom, locked the door, and tried to keep him awake while she waited for help. Then her phone vibrated with an unknown number. The message was brief, but crucial:

“Check the trash. There’s evidence. He’s coming back.”

Lucy didn't know who had sent him, but she understood she had to act. Outside, sirens began to wail, and for a moment she thought it would all end there. But just when she thought rescue was near, she heard the lock on the front door click again.

Steven had returned. And this time he wasn't alone.

What happened next would change Lucy's life forever and reveal that that dinner was just the beginning of an even more disturbing truth.

In short, that night turned a family dinner table into a trap, but it also showed the courage of a mother who refused to give up when all seemed lost.
