Martin Hale spoke carefully. “Your Honor, there may be context missing.”
“I would certainly hope so,” the judge replied.
Daniel leaned toward his attorney. “Fix this.”
It was barely audible.
But I heard it.
Fix this.
Not This isn’t true.
Not I didn’t do that.
Just fix this.
Claire turned one final page.
“Your Honor, there is also a trust established by Mrs. Carter’s late father for the benefit of his grandchildren. Mr. Carter was made aware of this trust during the marriage, though he was never granted control. Recent emails show Mr. Carter and Ms. Bennett discussing potential access after the divorce.”
Olivia stood halfway. “That’s not what happened.”
Judge Ellis looked at her. “Ms. Bennett, sit down.”
Olivia sat.
Her face flushed a deep, furious red.
Daniel stared at the table.
Claire’s voice softened, but only slightly.
“Mrs. Carter has not come here to prolong conflict. She is prepared to finalize the dissolution. However, she cannot consent to an agreement based on incomplete disclosures, hidden income, and conduct that suggests financial decisions were made without regard to the child’s stability.”
For a moment, no one spoke.
Rain tapped against the courthouse windows.
I remembered my mother’s car outside. Her worried hands on the steering wheel. The years she had spent building herself back after my father died, never once letting grief turn her cruel.
I remembered my father sitting beside me on the porch when I was twenty-two, telling me the world would always try to convince generous women that boundaries were unkind.
I had not understood that either.
Not until Daniel.
Judge Ellis removed her glasses.
“Mr. Hale, I am not approving this settlement today.”
Daniel’s head snapped up.
“Your Honor—”
“I said you will speak through counsel.” Her voice remained calm, which made it more final. “Given the nature of the allegations and documentation presented, I am ordering full financial disclosure within fourteen days. Temporary support will be recalculated based on all known income streams. The marital settlement agreement is stayed pending review.”
Daniel’s face went rigid.
Olivia looked like someone had quietly removed the floor beneath her.
Judge Ellis looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter, given your stage of pregnancy, I will also enter a temporary order preserving the current residence for you through birth and recovery unless and until this court orders otherwise.”
My breath caught.
The house.
My home.
