My father looked at my mother.
“Bring the photographs.”
My mother reached into the bottom of the box and pulled out an old envelope.
Inside was a photograph of three little girls.
They were sitting in a hospital hallway.
The oldest looked about ten years old.
The youngest was holding a worn-out doll.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
“December 14, 1986.”
My father spoke softly.
“That was the day their father died.”
I sat down.
“And what did you have to do with his death?”
My father remained silent for a long time.
Then he whispered,
“If it hadn’t been for me, he wouldn’t have been there that night.”
I could barely breathe.
“Did you force him to do something?”
My father closed his eyes.
“I was the one who asked him to come.”
At that moment, I was convinced my father had been hiding something terrible his entire life.
But then he continued.
“That night, a fire broke out at our factory. I was trapped inside. I couldn’t get out on my own. My best friend, Daniel, heard me calling for help and ran into the building.”
His voice broke.
“He got me out. But he didn’t survive.”
My mother was silently crying.
“Daniel had three daughters. His wife was seriously ill. After the funeral, I visited their home. Little Jessica looked at me and asked when her daddy was coming back.”
My father began to cry.
“I couldn’t answer her.”
I was still trying to understand.
“But why were you paying Mom to keep quiet?”
My mother finally stepped closer.
“Because I was the one who delivered that money to their family every month.”
I stared at her in disbelief.
“You knew about everything?”
She nodded.
“Yes. We decided together to help them. But Robert had one condition. Nobody could ever know where the money came from.”
My father continued.
“Daniel was a proud man. I knew his family would never accept charity. So we sent the money anonymously through a foundation.”
“For thirty years?”
“Yes. At first, it was for food and clothing. Then for school. Later, for university. And when their mother became ill, we helped pay for her medical treatment.”
