My Husband Believed Pregnancy, Two Children, No Job, And Financial Dependence Guaranteed I Would Never Leave Him. Then He Brought His Mistress Home And Told Me She Was Moving Into The Guest Suite.

Downstairs, Vanessa stood beside the dining table with her purse over one shoulder.
She looked less confident now.
Her emerald dress suddenly seemed painfully bright beneath the kitchen lights.
She glanced at the suitcases.
Then at Ryan.
“You told me she had nowhere to go.”
The room became silent.
Ryan’s head snapped toward her.
“Vanessa.”
She seemed to realize she had said too much.
I stopped.
“What exactly did he tell you?”
Ryan interrupted.
“Do not involve her.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“You said Claire knew your marriage was over.”
I looked at her.
“He told me this afternoon.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Ryan spoke sharply.
“Enough.”
But Vanessa was looking at me now.
“You said she agreed I could stay here until the apartment was ready.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Daniel whispered something under his breath.
I looked at Ryan.
“That is interesting.”
Ryan took one step toward Vanessa.
“We will talk later.”
She moved away from him.
“No.”
Apparently, I was not the only woman who had been given a fictional version of reality.
Vanessa grabbed her coat.
“I am going home.”
Ryan looked stunned.
“You moved your things here.”
“I can move them back.”
Then she walked past me.
She paused near the door.
“I didn’t know.”
I did not absolve her.
I did not insult her either.
I simply said, “You know now.”
She left.

Ryan stared after her.
Then he turned to me.
“You did this.”
That was almost funny.
“You brought her here.”
“You embarrassed her.”
“I said approximately seven words to her.”
“You knew what you were doing.”
“Yes.”
For the first time all evening, I smiled.
“I knew exactly what I was doing.”
I lifted the suitcase handle.
“Goodnight, Ryan.”

Fifteen minutes after my husband announced that his mistress would be moving into our guest suite, I walked out the front door with two children, three suitcases, a hospital bag, and a divorce petition he had never seen coming.
Behind me, Ryan shouted my name.
I did not turn around.

Natalie’s townhouse felt strange that first night.
The children had visited before, but they had never slept there.
Sophie wanted her night-light.
I had packed it.
Ethan wanted his stuffed dinosaur.
I had packed that too.
I had forgotten my own toothbrush.
That made me laugh for the first time that night.
After both children fell asleep, I sat at the kitchen counter and finally allowed my hands to shake.
My phone showed twenty-seven missed calls.
Sixteen were from Ryan.
Three were from Margaret.
Four were from Daniel.
