I couldn’t breathe.
“My mother?”
Nathan nodded.
“Your mother adopted Emily’s baby.”
I stared at him.
“That can’t be possible.”
“My mother wrote that your mother knew Emily was the biological mother.”
I began remembering things I’d never questioned.
My mother had always refused to talk about my birth.
She had told me I was adopted when I was little, but she never explained anything.
Whenever I asked about my biological parents, she’d simply say:
“Some stories are better left in the past.”
I had assumed she meant something painful.
I never imagined this.
Then Nathan received the DNA results.
He opened the email.
He read the first sentence.
Then he looked at me.
His eyes filled with tears.
“It’s a match.”
I couldn’t move.
“What?”
“Our daughter is biologically related to Emily.”
He sat down.
“She is Emily’s daughter.”
PART 9 — THE TRUTH ABOUT OUR DAUGHTER
Everything changed.
Our third daughter wasn’t simply our child.
She was the missing connection between two families that had spent decades living with a lie.
The birthmark wasn’t a coincidence.
The hospital records weren’t a coincidence.
And Emily’s disappearance suddenly had a completely different meaning.
Nathan spent weeks searching for her.
Eventually, a private investigator found a lead.
Emily had been alive.
She had changed her name.
She had spent years believing her baby had died.
And she had never stopped wondering what happened.
When Nathan finally found her, he called me.
“I found her.”
My heart raced.
“Where?”
“She lives three states away.”
“Does she know?”
“No.”
“What are you going to tell her?”
Nathan was silent for a moment.
“The truth.”
