"Me." One day I couldn't stand it anymore and I hid a camera... 😱💔

When my father-in-law, Robert, moved into our house, I was genuinely happy.

He was sixty-eight years old, had recently lost his wife, and lived completely alone in a huge house. My husband, Daniel, suggested he stay with us for a while. Our six-year-old daughter, Emily, adored her grandfather, and whenever he was with her, Robert seemed to regain his zest for life.

During the first few weeks, everything seemed completely normal.

Robert took Emily to school, made her breakfast, and read her stories at night. When I got home late from work, my daughter had already eaten dinner and her backpack was packed for the next day.

I was grateful. But then I started noticing strange things.

One morning I sent Emily to school in a blue dress. When she came home that afternoon, she was wearing a pink tracksuit.

"What happened to your dress?" I asked her.

Emily shrugged.

—Grandpa said I had to change my clothes.

Robert immediately explained that Emily had spilled juice on her dress during lunch. I didn't ask any more questions. That kind of thing happens to kids all the time. But two days later it happened again. And then it happened once more.

Sometimes Robert would change her clothes twice in a single week. Every time she asked him why, he always had an answer ready.

Once she said Emily had gotten mud on her while playing outside. Another time she claimed she had been sweating. Later she said the shirt was uncomfortable. The strangest thing was that she washed the clothes immediately.

One night I went into the laundry room and found Robert hand-washing only Emily's clothes.

"Why don't you put it in the washing machine?" I asked her.

For a moment, he froze. Then he submerged the clothes further in the water.

—Some stains don't come out in the washing machine.

There was something about his voice that made me uncomfortable. That night I told Daniel everything.

"He's just being overprotective," my husband said. "Don't forget he spent his whole life working with children."

Robert had been a school bus driver for many years. Everyone in town knew and respected him. But that didn't put my mind at ease.

Then the bathroom time problem began.

Every night, as I was getting ready to bathe Emily, Robert would appear near the bathroom and say:

—You're tired. Let me bathe her.

The first time I refused.

The following night he offered again. When I told him I didn't need help, a strange tension appeared on his face.

"It would be better if I did it," she whispered. "Please."

That "please" kept going around in my head all night.

The next day, Emily's teacher called me and said that my daughter had been unusually quiet during class. She had asked to go to the school nurse's office, but refused to explain why.

I felt my heart shrink.

When I got home, I opened Emily's bedroom closet. In the bottom drawer, I found a bag containing the clothes Robert had taken from her over the past few days. Some of the garments had dark stains that were barely visible.

One terrible thought after another raced through my mind. I tried to talk to my daughter calmly.

—Sweetheart, has Grandpa ever forced you to do something you didn't want to do?

Emily looked at me for a long moment before looking down.
