My card was declined while I was buying nappies for my baby. My husband told me to figure it out myself. His mother called me a useless leech. So I rang my late father's banker and said one sentence.

He goes to that office every morning to close it down properly.

Four apprentices placed with other firms so far. Ottoline has something starting in the February.

It is the hardest thing I have ever watched a person do and it is considerably more than I expected of him, and I say that knowing exactly how it sounds.

Rosamund has her house.

She does not know how and she is not going to be told by me and she is not going to be told by Garrick, and the two of us agreed that at about two in the morning and it is the only thing we agreed on that night.

She has not apologised and I have not asked her to, and I am not sure now which of those two is the bigger problem. We have spoken twice, about Juno both times, politely, for about eleven minutes.

Here is the only thing I have.

Everybody wants this to be about a woman at a till with one hundred and fourteen dollars of nappies and a phone call that could flatten a man by morning.

That happened.

All of it, exactly as I have written it. The card, the queue, the three words, the camel coat, the car park.

I had the button and it was real and it would have worked by morning, and on the facts available to me at four o'clock that afternoon that man deserved considerably worse than he got.

But I had six years.

Six years.

Sunday evenings. A boiler we argued about for eleven days. His mother's birthdays, four of them, at a dining set she has since sold.

All of it on top of a thing in a drawer that nobody in that family knew existed except a banker in another city and a dead man.

And I never once put it on the table.

Not in a good year. Not in a bad one. Not on the night we agreed on a name for our daughter, which is the single most honest conversation that man and I have ever had and which I ended by going to bed.

If you are holding something somebody close to you does not know you are holding —

the money, the document, the thing your father left you, the fact that you could leave on Friday —

say it out loud.

Now. On an ordinary evening, with nothing happening, over a cup of tea, when there is no crisis to attach it to and nobody is going to think you are threatening them.
