Part 3
With the hospital results, Mia’s account, and Laura’s statement, the police had enough.
Gregory Hale was arrested at his office that week.
Our quiet suburb couldn’t believe it. To the neighbors and the PTA, he was the model single dad: successful, generous with his time, always the first to sign up to coach a team or run a bake sale table. People who had never met me posted online that there must be some mistake.
But the investigation was just getting started.
A private investigator working with our lawyer found that Gregory had been following our family’s life for almost ten years. He had saved our home addresses, our wedding photos, and years of Mia’s school pictures. He hadn’t moved into our school district by chance. He had picked the house, enrolled Owen in Mia’s class, and then built the friendship on purpose.
Police then searched a storage unit he’d rented under a different name. Inside, they found the materials he had used and a black notebook.
