I chose not to pretend everything was fine. Before the dinner, Ryan had warned me that losing his job would hurt the entire family financially, making it clear that he expected me to protect his reputation. But when Mr. Holloway praised Ryan as a devoted husband and father, I asked whether he had mentioned the women he had described to me as shipboard guests. Ryan immediately tried to stop me, so I placed my phone on the table and played a doorbell-camera recording of our conversation. In it, he openly admitted sleeping with multiple women and showed no concern for the consequences. Mr. Holloway questioned whether the encounters had involved passengers while Ryan was working, then explained that company rules could not be ignored. He left without finishing dinner and said he would take the matter to human resources. Ryan’s promised shore position disappeared, and he turned on me, accusing me of jeopardizing the family’s finances. Yet I had already arranged for Dana to care for the twins while I stayed in her spare room. I knew that leaving would bring difficult questions about income, childcare, and eventually the legal arrangements surrounding our separation, but remaining dependent on Ryan felt just as risky.
The following week, Ryan’s dismissal was confirmed, and I returned to work while beginning to sort out our future. Dana’s spare room was cramped, with two portable cribs squeezed beside the bed, and I still had no money for a rental deposit. The practical challenges were frightening, especially with two babies depending on me, but I no longer had to wake up beside someone who expected betrayal to be forgotten simply because he apologized. Ryan later promised that he would change, and part of me wanted to believe the man who had once gently hummed to Ava in the nursery. Still, promises had brought me to the port, and broken promises had brought me back to the same painful choice. I left without knowing exactly how I would manage the months ahead. That evening, as Dana placed two plates of pasta on the kitchen table, I finally sat down and ate. My new life was uncertain, but for the first time in a long while, the next decision would be mine.
