I arrived at the port with our baby twins to surprise my husband, who was returning from months at sea

And at one point she said she had not slept, she was that excited.

And I ate my breakfast.

And about four times in that forty minutes I nearly said it. I can still feel where those four moments were.

And every single time, what stopped me was not kindness.

It was that if I told her in a dining room at half seven, she would have had three hours to decide how to be when she saw him — and she would have decided to be dignified, because that is what that woman is.

And I did not want dignified. I wanted the thing that happens to a face when it has not been given any warning.

That is what those four moments were about, and I knew it at the time, and I buttered toast.

What that did to her.

She was sixty in the November and she did not have the thing she was going to have.

And she has not had Corey in that house since the September of 2025 and she will not have him, and that is hers and she has not moved.

And in the February, in my kitchen, she said one thing about the terminal and then she has never raised it again.

She said: “You knew before we got on the plane, didn’t you.”

And I said yes.

And she looked at the table for a bit and then she said: “Right.”

And that is all. That woman has had the girls two days a week since the October and she has never once used it against me and I think she never will.

And she had two days on a trip she thought was about meeting her granddaughters.

And Shauna, who rang me on the twenty-third of April and who asked me not to say where it came from.

I kept that. I have never named her to anybody at Kettleby and I never will.

And in the September of 2025, after it had all come out, she lost her place on that ship.

Not because of me. Because Corey and Jana worked out between them, inside about a fortnight, who the four or five people were who could have known, and Jana said something to somebody.

And a woman of twenty-six who did the right thing in April is now working somewhere at Vayle Harbour doing something else.

And she sent me one message about it, in the October, and it was not angry.
