And I stood there with two babies in my arms while that man smiled at me.
And then something in me went very quiet, and I knew exactly what I was going to do.
“Do you know what, love. I understand. I really do.”
And I smiled at him.
“But there’s one thing you’ve forgotten. Look to your right.”
And the smile came straight off his face.
What was to his right.
His mother.
Dinah Lowther, fifty-nine, standing about eleven feet away by a pillar with a bag over her shoulder, where she had been for the whole of it.
She had seen the kiss. She had heard every word of what he said about men and about one woman not being realistic, because he was not quiet about any of it.
And she walked over and she did not shout.
She said: “Give me one of them, Pia.”
And she took Opal off me, and she stood next to me, and the two of us looked at him.
And Corey Lowther stood in a terminal at Vayle Harbour and did not say anything for about ten seconds, and then he said: “Mum.”
And that is the end of the part everybody at Kettleby knows.
How she got there.
I bought her the ticket.
I bought two tickets the day before. One for me and one for her, and we flew up together on the Friday morning and stayed in the same hotel, and we had breakfast together at half seven on the Saturday.
And I asked her, in the June, to come.
Which means that on the eleventh of July, 2025, there were two women and two babies in that terminal, and only one person in that building did not know what was about to happen.
And the three weeks between booking and flying, which I have left as a gap.
I booked on the twenty-fourth of June, about an hour after she said yes.
And between then and the tenth of July I did three things that are not in any telling.
I rang the cruise line’s office on the twenty-seventh, as a wife, to confirm the docking time, and they gave it to me.
I asked my sister on the second of July whether she would have the girls that weekend, and she said yes — and then I rang her back the next day and said I had changed my mind and that I wanted them with me.
