I accidentally overheard my son's boyfriend on a call, and I called the police immediately.

“I was planning to tell you. But Andrés told me he was sick. Then he begged me for time to write everything down. I gave him a deadline. Today.”

“Our wedding?” Diego said.

“I told him after the wedding. Not before. I thought you deserved a day without him.”

Andrés whispered, “It was my fault.”

I turned to him.

“You can’t back down now. You made your choices.”

"I know."

Her face crumbled.

"No."

I let out a humorless laugh.

“Don’t rewrite history.”

“I’m not. I said horrible things that night. I was scared, selfish, and cruel. But I didn’t leave because he was a child.”

He looked at Diego.

“Because I had already become someone I hated. I was gambling. I owed money. I had taken cash from your mother, and I knew that if I stayed, I would keep taking it. So I left. Afterward, I felt ashamed. And the shame lingered for years.”

Diego stared at him.

“Is that your explanation?”

“No,” Andrés said. “That’s the truth. Not an excuse.”

Diego looked at Javier.

“You should have told me.”

"I know."

“Before today.”

"Yeah."

“Before I married you.”

For a moment, I thought my son might wander away from us.

Instead, he said, “Everyone to that room.”

He pointed to the living room.

“No guests. No speeches. Nobody else knows until I decide.”

That was my son.

We sat in the small room while the police waited outside. Officer Ramirez remained near the door, but once it was clear that no one was being forced or threatened, his demeanor relaxed.

Diego finally took the folder.

He opened the first letter.

The envelope was written, “Diego, 1 year old.”

Her hands trembled.

She closed the folder and looked at Andrés.

“Why now?” he asked.

Andrés pursed his lips.

“Because I started forgetting words. Then streets. Last month I forgot your name for almost a minute.”

Diego shuddered.

Andrés' voice broke.

“I realized that I had spent my whole life hiding from what I remembered, and soon I might not remember enough to say sorry.”

Nobody spoke.

Andrés shook his head.

“No. I want you to have the option of knowing the truth before I can no longer give it to you.”

Diego looked at Javier.

"And you?"

Javier leaned forward.

“I wanted to protect your wedding day. But I also wanted to protect myself.”

Diego blinked.

“If I told you, you might hate me for finding it. If I didn’t, you might hate me for hiding it. So I just kept choosing one more day.”

I hated that answer because it was honest.

Diego leaned back, tears streaming down his face.

“Congratulations to me. I married a man who keeps secrets like my parents.”

Javier covered his mouth.

“No. Not now.”

That hurt, but I held it in.

The police left after taking everyone's information. Officer Ramirez told Diego quietly that nothing criminal appeared to have happened, but that he could call if anyone pressured him.

When the officers left, Diego stood up.

“I’m going back to my reception area.”
