FULL STORY: The morning after our wedding, I was emptying my husband’s tuxedo pockets before taking it to the dry cleaners.

**Costa Rica.**

Daniel had known me well enough to know I would eventually understand.

The three of us boarded the flight that afternoon under different names supplied by Mara.

Our honeymoon became a hunt for a dead man’s secret.

The coordinates led us deep into the mountains to a small eco-lodge that had closed years earlier.

Cabin seventeen stood at the edge of the rainforest.

B-17.

I looked at Callum.

“The key wasn’t for the station locker.”

He nodded slowly.

“Mara must have duplicated it.”

Mara said nothing.

That silence made me turn.

“Mara?”

She was holding a gun.

Callum moved in front of me.

“Mara.”

“Don’t.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

The anonymous messages.

The convenient appearance at the station.

The men who had supposedly found us.

“You sent those messages,” I whispered.

“Yes.”

“There was never anyone chasing us.”

“Oh, there were people chasing us,” she replied. “Just not who you thought.”

Callum’s face became cold.

“You were working with Vale.”

Mara smiled sadly.

**“Vale was working for me.”**

The world tilted.

She had never been a disgraced investigator hunting criminals.

She had built the network.

Daniel had discovered her.

Callum had unknowingly been used to locate the evidence.

“And when you fell in love with her,” Mara told him, “you became inconvenient.”

Callum stepped closer.

“You called her because you needed her memory.”

“Exactly.”

She pointed the gun at me.

“Open cabin seventeen.”

I inserted the silver key.

The lock turned.

Inside, the cabin was empty except for an old wooden table.

On it sat a small metal box.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a flash drive.

Mara smiled.

“Finally.”

Then I noticed something beneath it.

A Polaroid.

Daniel and me.

On the back, he had written:

**For my annoying little sister—if you ever find this, remember our game. Never give the thief the real treasure.**

My heart stopped.

Our childhood game.

Daniel would hide candy around the house and create fake treasure boxes.

The obvious prize was always a decoy.

I looked at the flash drive.

Then at the photograph.

**This wasn’t the evidence.**

Mara snatched the drive.

“You got what you wanted,” Callum said. “Let her go.”

Mara smiled.

“I’m afraid she still knows too much.”

She raised the gun.

And suddenly the cabin exploded with sound.

“FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP THE WEAPON!”

Mara froze.

People poured through both doors.

She was forced to the floor.

I stared at Callum.

He looked just as shocked as I was.

Then a familiar voice came from behind us.

“Still terrible at solving my puzzles, little sister.”

My entire body went numb.

No.

Impossible.

I turned.

A man stepped into the cabin.

Older.

Thinner.

A scar crossing his temple.

But I knew those eyes.

I knew that crooked smile.

“Daniel?”

My dead brother smiled.

**“Hi, kiddo.”**

# PART 7 — MY DEAD BROTHER CAME TO MY WEDDING

I couldn’t move.

Daniel opened his arms.

I slapped him.

Hard.

The room fell silent.

He touched his cheek.

“Okay,” he said. “I deserved that.”

Then I threw myself against him.

A sound came out of me that I had never heard before.

Half sob.

Half scream.

Daniel held me while four years of grief tore through my body.

“You were dead.”

“I know.”

“I buried you!”

“Not exactly.”

I pulled back.

“What?”

“The body was identified through compromised records. There was no open-casket funeral.”

I remembered.

The crash had been horrific.

Authorities had advised us not to view him.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“To keep you alive.”

Daniel explained everything.

He had uncovered Mara’s operation while working as a forensic accountant. When she discovered what he knew, federal investigators helped fake his death and place him in witness protection.

But there had been a leak.

They couldn’t know whom to trust.

So Daniel hid the evidence.

Then he watched from a distance.

“You knew about Callum?”

“Eventually.”

I turned toward my husband.

Callum looked furious.

“You used her.”

Daniel shook his head.

“At first, I thought you were using her.”

“So you investigated me.”

“For four years.”
