FULL STORY: The morning after our wedding, I was emptying my husband’s tuxedo pockets before taking it to the dry cleaners.

“No.”

The word cut deeper than I expected.

“Was anything real?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Everything after.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No,” he whispered. **“I expect you to hate me.”**

Then Mara suddenly grabbed my arm.

Across the station, two men in dark jackets were moving toward us.

Her face drained of color.

“We have to go.”

Callum heard her voice through the phone.

His tone changed instantly.

“Mara?”

She took the phone.

“They found her.”

Callum shouted something.

Mara hung up.

“Who found me?”

She pulled me toward the exit.

“The people your brother tried to expose.”

“But that was four years ago.”

Mara looked directly at me.

**“They waited because Callum convinced them you remembered nothing.”**

She glanced at the envelope in my hands.

“And now somebody just proved otherwise.”

# PART 5 — THE MEMORY I HAD BURIED

We ran.

Mara led me through the station parking garage toward an old blue sedan.

Before we reached it, tires screamed behind us.

A black SUV turned into the lane.

“Get down!”

Mara shoved me behind a concrete pillar.

The SUV slowed.

My entire body shook.

Then another car shot down the ramp and blocked it.

Callum jumped out.

Still wearing the white shirt from our wedding.

No jacket.

No tie.

His hair was disheveled.

I had never seen him look so terrified.

“Get in!”

Mara pushed me toward him.

I resisted.

“Why should I trust either of you?”

“You shouldn’t,” Callum said. “But if you stay here, you won’t get the chance to decide.”

That sounded like the man I knew.

Maybe that was why I got in.

We drove for almost an hour.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Callum stopped outside an abandoned farmhouse beyond the city.

Inside, Mara locked the door.

Callum stood several feet away from me.

He didn’t try to touch me.

“Tell me everything.”

He nodded.

“Four years ago, Mara asked me to watch you. Your brother Daniel had uncovered a criminal network operating through Hartwell & Pierce. We believed he had given you evidence before he died.”

“He never did.”

“We eventually realized that.”

“Then why keep following me?”

“Because they were following you too.”

I stared at him.

“On April 14,” Callum continued, “you stayed late at work. Someone came looking for a file Daniel had hidden.”

Something flickered inside my head.

A hallway.

Fluorescent lights.

A man shouting.

I gripped the table.

Callum noticed.

“What?”

“I remember…”

The memory came violently.

**A red folder.**

I had found it behind an archive cabinet.

Daniel’s handwriting was on it.

Then footsteps.

A man entered.

He grabbed me.

I ran.

Stairs.

Rain.

Headlights.

Then nothing.

“I was in an accident.”

Mara nodded.

“You were found unconscious beside your car. The doctors called it a concussion.”

“But it wasn’t an accident,” I whispered.
