“These measurements are consistent with conception several weeks
earlier.”
The room became still.
Michael blinked.
“What does that mean?”
Dr. Warren looked at Sabrina.
Then he asked one simple question.
“Ms. Hale, are you certain Mr. Carrington is the father?”
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Helen’s hand dropped from her mouth.
Richard looked at Michael.
Monica stared at Sabrina.
Michael gave a nervous laugh.
“Of course I’m the father.”
The doctor remained professional.
“I’m not making any accusation.”
“I’m telling you that the gestational timeline does not align with the
history documented in the chart.”
Michael turned toward Sabrina.
“What is he talking about?”
Sabrina’s face had lost its color.
“Michael, I can explain.”
Those four words changed the room.
Michael stood.
“Explain what?”
Dr. Warren quietly asked whether the family wanted privacy.
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
Then he looked at Sabrina.
“Explain.”
Sabrina stared at her hands.
“There was someone before you.”
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“You told me your previous relationship ended in December.”
“It did.”
“Then how could this baby have been conceived in January?”
Sabrina did not answer.
Monica stepped forward.
“Sabrina?”
Sabrina closed her eyes.
Her silence answered before her mouth did.
Michael looked at the ultrasound monitor.
The boy he had already claimed as his suddenly became a question.
Helen sat down.
Richard’s face hardened.
“Who?”
Sabrina whispered, “Evan.”
Michael stared at her.
“Evan Mercer?”
She nodded.
Michael knew the name.
Evan was Sabrina’s former fiancé.
The man she had described as controlling.
The man she said she had left months before becoming close to Michael.
Michael laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“You told me you hadn’t seen him.”
“I was confused.”
“You told me this baby was mine.”
“I thought he was.”
“Thought?”
His voice rose.
“You destroyed my marriage because you thought?”
Dr. Warren interrupted.
“Mr. Carrington, this conversation needs to remain calm.”
Michael looked at him.
Then he looked back at Sabrina.
“My marriage was already falling apart.”
Sabrina’s eyes filled with tears.
“You said that.”
Michael froze.
Monica turned toward him.
“What?”
Sabrina looked frightened now.
“You told me you and Laura were finished before anything happened.”
Michael’s face tightened.
Helen stared at her son.
“When did this start?”
Michael ignored her.
Sabrina continued.
“You told me Laura knew.”
“She didn’t.”
“You said you were sleeping in separate rooms.”
