I didn’t know what I thought.
I simply knew that something was happening in my own house, involving my own daughter, and I was the only person who didn’t understand it.
The next morning, I bought a small indoor camera.
I placed it high on a bookshelf in Emma’s room.
Then I waited.
For three nights, nothing happened.
On the fourth night, at 3:17 a.m., Evan entered the room.
He didn’t wake Emma.
Instead, he walked directly to her bed.
He sat beside her.
Then he pulled something from his pocket.
I leaned closer to my phone.
It was a small medical flashlight.
My heart started racing.
Evan gently lifted Emma’s hand.
He looked at her fingers.
Then her eyes.
Then he checked the clock.
3:19.
He whispered something.
I couldn’t hear it.
Then Emma suddenly moved.
Her entire body became stiff.
I covered my mouth.
Evan immediately sat upright.
He started timing something on his phone.
Thirty seconds.
Forty.
Fifty.
Then Emma relaxed.
Evan put his hand on her forehead.
He looked terrified.
I stopped the recording.
For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe.
I called Evan.
He answered immediately.
“Carrie?”
“What’s wrong with Emma?”
Silence.
“Evan, I saw the recording.”
Another silence.
Then he whispered:
“Where are you?”
“At home.”
“I’m coming back.”
He arrived twenty minutes later.
I was standing in the kitchen with my phone in my hand.
“What is happening to our daughter?”
He looked at me.
His eyes filled with tears.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“Protect me from what?”
“The truth.”
I felt my knees weaken.
“Then tell me.”
