Eight years after my ex-husband abandoned me for being pregnant, he invited me to Christmas dinner so he could parade his perfect new life in front of me. He expected me to arrive alone, heartbroken, and forgotten. Instead, I landed in a helicopter with the four children he never knew existed—and watched the color drain from his face before I even reached the front door.

The message came in on a freezing December evening while I was at my desk looking out over Calder Point.

The name on the screen stopped my heart.

***Weston Marr.***

I sat and looked at it for a long time.

Eight years since the man who promised to love me forever told me I was lying about being pregnant, filed, changed his number, and went — before he had heard a single heartbeat.

And now he wanted to see me.

It was two lines.

***Come to Mum’s at Thornedge for Christmas dinner. The family would like to see you one last time.***

I laughed. Not because it was funny.

Because I knew exactly what that was.

He still had me filed as the woman he left. Alone. Forgotten. Embarrassing.

He had no idea what the last eight years had been.

Dalia came in as I put the phone down. “You’re not actually thinking about going.”

I looked at the lights going on across the city.

“Oh, I’m going.”

Christmas morning came up hard and blue and cold.

And the helicopter went up with the four best things that have ever happened to me in it.

“Mum,” Rory said, about four times, “are we actually meeting Grandad today?”

“And Grandma?” said Saskia.

“Maybe.”

Four eight-year-olds opposite me in matching red. Rory. Linus. Saskia. Mirren. Two boys, two girls.

Every one of them with his grey eyes and that jaw and the smile.

Eight years of a man running from fatherhood, with four of them sitting in a helicopter over the Thornedge road.

We put down on the lawn at eleven forty-seven.
