“Dispatch, this is Deputy Brandt on County Road 6. I’ve got a woman here who insists I announce her name.”
He gave a short laugh.
“Shirley Hagen. Does that mean anything to anybody?”
The radio went quiet.
Then the dispatcher answered.
“Deputy Brandt, repeat that name.”
Kyle frowned.
“Shirley Hagen.”
Another pause.
“Shirley Hagen? Are you with Shirley Hagen right now?”
“Yes. Why?”
Before the dispatcher could respond, another voice came through.
“Did somebody say Shirley Hagen?”
Then another.
“Tell Shirley that Miller from Fire Station Three says hello.”
A third voice followed.
“This is Trooper Adams. Is that the Shirley who worked overnight dispatch?”
I stared at the radio.
Kyle looked confused.
Mom simply folded her hands in front of her.

And another deputy.
And another.
One after another, people across the county began greeting my mother with unmistakable warmth.

Kyle straightened.
“Yes, Sheriff.”
“How long has she been waiting outside?”
Silence.
Mom looked at Kyle.
She didn’t interrupt.
She didn’t attempt to answer for him.
She simply waited.
Finally, he admitted, “Approximately forty minutes, sir.”
The sheriff’s voice became firm.
“Have her sit somewhere cool immediately. I’m coming to your location.”
Kyle swallowed.
“Yes, sir.”
But before he could put the microphone down, another voice crackled through the speaker.
And this one changed everything.
“Is Shirley all right?”
The voice belonged to Walt Brandt.
Kyle’s father.
I watched my mother turn toward the radio.
A small smile appeared on her face.
“Hello, Walt,” she said.
Kyle looked from Mom to the microphone.
“Dad?”
Walt’s voice softened.
“Son, do you know who that woman is?”
Kyle didn’t answer.
And that’s when I finally began to understand just how much of my mother’s life I’d
